ACTN offers hospitality to less previleged
Accommodation Cape Town North (ACTN), the society of 90 odd Bed and Breakfast / guesthouse establishments in the northern suburbs of Cape Town, decided to contribute R5000 of its membership funds towards a charitable cause in Cape Town North. Of the many organisations in our part of the city that engage people in need, we had to make a choice between Bellville Care Mission and an initiative of a couple of dedicated Christian ladies. Whereas the former aids street people and foreigners fleeing from xenophobic attacks, the latter reach a helping hand to crèches in Fisantekraal. We felt that it would be best to limit ourselves to helping only one organisation at a time instead of dividing our donation. The Fisantekraal project was initiated by Mses Edith Fehrsen and Linda Oosthuizen. According to them there are about 15 crèches run in RDP houses and shacks in Fisantekraal, the township north of Durbanville. A total of 410 children are cared for on a daily base. The general idea is to improve help improve crèche facilities. A Wendy house has for instance been erected next to a shack that had hitherto served as crèche. However small in our estimation, it provides more space and a healthier building for the children, especially during winter. As Wendy houses are drafty the walls need to be cladded on the inside walls and roof. A carpet on the floor is also essential. Paint for the walls and ceiling and plumbing for the necessary cooking and washing of hands are also needed. So is fencing material.
The aim is to lift the standard to the extent that crèches become eligible for subsidies from the Department of Social Services. A fundraising concert organised by the Tyger Burger was also held on Sunday 26 July in the Bellville Civic Centre of which some of the proceeds go to this cause.
As ACTN our business is hospitality - the giving or being disposed to give welcome and entertainment to strangers or guests (Oxford Dictionary). Whereas we all practice hospitality to those that can afford staying at our up-market establishments, it is good to also be in a position to extend our hospitality to little children in Fisantekraal by contributing to establishments that serve their needs.

Winning drama returns: 27 October - 7 November

Crutchley, who skillfully portrays close to 40 different characters, effortlessly slips into the heart and mind of Charlotte von Mahlsdorf, a German transvestite caught up in the great European dramas of the twentieth century.
The play offers insight into Von Mahlsdorf’s perspectives and tells the amazing story of a mild-mannered human being who triumphed over a violent childhood and the brutalities of both the Nazis and the Communists to carve out a dignified life as an open cross-dresser in the East Berlin of the time.
Tickets can be booked through Computicket.

International soccer to hit city (26 November - 3 December)
BRIAN GAFFNEY
RENOWNED former professional soccer ace, Duncan Crowie, is in awe about the forthcoming Cape Town Peace Cup, which will take place in the Mother City from 26 November to 3 December.
Crowie (46), who has experienced several highs during his soccer career, says the inaugural eight-team international cup event for u.19s promises to become “a top-class showpiece” for the participating teams and thousands of spectators.
Boca Juniors from Argentina, Eintracht Frankfurt from Germany, Chelsea from England and Staebek from Norway will carry their countries’ flags at this major competition prior to the 2010 Soccer World Cup in South Africa.
Ajax Cape Town, Orlando Pirates, SuperSport United and Santos FC, where Crowie serves as the Director of Youth Coaching, will be South Africa’s representatives in the competition.
“This is a great opportunity for our South African clubs to gauge their strength and lift the standard of their game. Our youth teams need to regularly take on top sides from overseas and elsewhere in Africa in championships like these to keep up with tactical developments in the sport,” Crowie says.
Crowie, one of the Soccer Ambassadors from Cape Town for the 2010 Soccer World Cup, acknowledges the experience of being part of the Peace Cup will enrich his soccer memoirs.
Crowie’s achievements include being the first Cape Town footballer to represent Bafana Bafana, which made its international debut against Cameroon at the old Goodwood Showground in 1992.
He also captained Santos at the time of soccer unification in 1991 and, ironically, enjoyed a trial at Chelsea FC in the English FA in 1986. John Hollins was at the helm of the top London club at the time.
The Peace Cup matches are scheduled to take place at Athlone Stadium, Erica Park Stadium in Belhar and the Stephan Reagon Sports Complex in Mitchell’s Plain.
The King and Queen of Norway, as well as a host of other dignitaries will be present at the opening ceremony on 26 November at the Green Point Stadium, whereafter the opening matches will be played at the Athlone Stadium.
The draw for the Peace Cup – which will be held in Oslo, Norway on Thursday – will be attended by officials from the participating clubs, including Ajax boss John Comitis, and his counterpart, Goolam Allie of Santos.
The organisers of the Peace Cup are the South African Peace Conference (SACP) and the Nobel Peace Centre in Cape Town (TygerBurger 7.10.09).
