Cape Argus PnP Cycle Tour 2009
The world famous “Argus” cycle tour will take place on Sunday, 13 March 2011. After the past few years’ bad weather - heat and wind - the Cape really hopes to host less hostile conditions this time round. The 109km course follows some of the most scenic routes that Cape Town has to offer. It starts in the city centre, outside the Civic Centre. Cyclists then travel along the M3 to Muizenberg. From there the route takes the coastal road to Simonstown and then go past the entrance to the Cape Point Nature Reserve. It continues to Scarborough and on to Oceanview, missing the Kommetjie Hill. Then its Chapman’s Peak and up Suikerbossie and along the coast to Greenpoint.
Niederheim Bed and Breakfast offers luxury accommodation at a budget price to cyclists. Being close to the N1 highway and a mere 20 km from the starting point in Cape Town, it is ideally located for participants from the North. It offers safe parking and storing facilities of cycling equipment. Your friendly hosts will gladly cater for the special dietary needs of the ardent cyclist. 500 days to kick-off has now become 250 days
The 500 day mark to kick-off of the 2010 Fifa Soccer World Cup, the largest sporting event in the world, in South Africa has been reached. Cape Town will gain a few million more fans as a cumulative total of 35 billion television viewers will see some of the world’s best soccer teams compete at the Mother City’s brand new Green Point Stadium for the most coveted trophy on the planet.
Niederheim is conveniently situated within walking distance to utilise the by then largely upgraded and integrated public transport system to this impressive stadium or to stroll to the Bellville Velodrome fan park on foot. At this hotspot all 64 matches will be big-screened live for eight thousand enthusiastic fans. According to Fifa parameters it will be open each day of the competition; entry will be free of charge; food and beverage will be available; it will be in a fenced and secured area; and have a stage big enough for live entertainment. It will also have a VIP area, a merchendising area, a commercial area for Fifa partners, a grandstand and hospitality, toilets, office space, a viewing area for disabled persons, and media services.
With an expected influx of 300 000 visitors eight new hotels are currently being built. However, guest house accommodation is not only considerably more economical but offers overseas visitors the benefit of experiencing South African life in a real sense as they share their local hosts’ home. Niederheim’s hostess, Esther and her husband Jan hail from age old Cape-Dutch families and later arrivals of immigrants from the Netherlands, Germany and England. With their native Afrikaans language, or Cape-Dutch, communication with Dutch speakers is quite easy. Esther, who was born in Kenya has like Jan lived, worked and travelled in most parts of South and Southern Africa. Together they have extensive exposure to both rural and urban life of indigenous Africans as well as intimate knowledge of Cape Town and surrounds which they happily share with interested guests.
